NRC: No water in spent fuel pool of Japan plant
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The chief of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said all the water is gone from one of the spent fuel pools at Japan's most troubled nuclear plant, raising the possibility of widespread nuclear fallout. But Japanese officials denied the pool was dry.
"There is no water in the spent fuel pool and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures," NRC Chairman Gregory Jaczko said Wednesday at a U.S. House Energy and Commerce subcommittee hearing.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Federal Reserve offered its most optimistic view of the U.S. economy since the recession ended, even as Japan's nuclear crisis stoked new worries around the globe.
The economic recovery is on "firmer footing" and the jobs market is "improving gradually," the Fed declared in its statement released at the conclusion of its meeting Tuesday.
That's a more upbeat tone from its previous meeting on Jan. 26, when Fed policymakers said the rate of economic activity was "insufficient" to bring about "significant improvement" in the job market.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dynegy Inc. said it may have to seek bankruptcy protection if it can't meet certain earnings requirements by its creditors this year.

Chinese airlines buy 43 Boeing jets at HK air show
HONG KONG (AP) -- Chinese airlines announced a batch of deals to buy airplanes from Boeing and other Western plane makers at a major Asian air show on Tuesday, underlining the rapid expansion of China's aviation market.
Flag carrier Air China and Hong Kong Airlines plan to buy planes from Boeing Co. worth about $10 billion at sticker prices, with Air China becoming the first Chinese airline to order the 747-8 Intercontinental jet. HNA Group, the parent company of Hong Kong Airlines and Hainan Airlines, also signed agreements to buy smaller jets from Gulfstream and Dassault Falcon.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- A man suing the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia says clergy covered up sexual assault allegations against a Roman Catholic priest who molested him in the 1990s.
In a lawsuit filed Monday in the city's Court of Common Pleas, plaintiff Phil Gaughan said he was assaulted from age 14 to 17 at Our Lady of Calvary church in northeast Philadelphia.
Gaughan was assigned to prepare and maintain the church sacristy, where vestments and other equipment are stored for Mass, when he said he was sexually abused by Monsignor John E. Gillespie from 1994 to 1997.
Japan halts vaccines after deaths of 4 children
TOKYO (AP) -- Japan has temporarily stopped using vaccines from U.S. drugmaker Pfizer Inc. and Sanofi-Aventis SA of France while it investigates the deaths of four children who were inoculated, the health ministry said Monday.
The decision to halt the vaccines against pneumonia, some types of meningitis and other infections was made Saturday. The government is hearing from experts at a meeting Tuesday, the health ministry said.
The four children, from under six months to 2 years old, died between March 2 and March 4. The deaths occurred the same day to three days after the vaccines were administered, the ministry said.

(CNN) -- A Houston day care owner is among the U.S. Marshals Service's "most wanted," more than a week after authorities say she carelessly started a fire that killed four children and then fled.
The federal agency on Friday added Jessica Tata to its "15 Most Wanted" fugitive list, cautioning the public that she should be considered "armed and dangerous."
Houston fire department investigators twice tried to talk to the 22-year-old Tata on February 25, the day after the blaze in which seven children were trapped inside the home day care, according to a press release Friday from the U.S. Marshals. She initially refused and then, later that day, referred all questions to her lawyer -- the last known contact between her and law enforcement.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- South Korea's foreign currency reserves hit a new record high in February for the second straight month, the central bank said Thursday, though the country's global ranking slipped to seventh in total holdings.
The country's official foreign reserves totaled $297.67 billion at the end of last month, the Bank of Korea said in a statement, up $1.71 billion from the previous high of $295.96 billion in January.
South Korea's reserves, the world's seventh largest as of the end of January, hit a series of all-time highs last year. Asian countries lead the world in reserve holdings.

Clinton: US to look at Gadhafi for Pan Am bombing

Gas company memo said valves of little value
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Officials for a California gas company involved in a deadly pipeline explosion last September acknowledged Tuesday that four years before the accident they rejected installing valves that could have automatically shut off or remotely controlled the flow of gas.
Pacific Gas and Electric Co. employees were questioned at a National Transportation Safety Board hearing about a 2006 memo that said installing the valves would have "little or no effect on increasing human safety or protecting properties."
