iOS 5: Users report failed updates and delays

iOS 5: Users report failed updates and delays The launch of the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, iOS 5, was marred by users experiencing problems with their devices.

Apple launched iOS 5, the new version of its mobile operating system, last night, but the launch was not without problems.

The sheer number of people trying to download the new Apple software appears to have caused problems with the company's servers. Many users reported long waiting times to download the operating system as well as failed updates.

Business Insider, the American news website, reported that several of its staff had been unable to update and received error messages.

Other users have reported problems such as music collections that were not transferred after the update and apps that disappeared during the update. In some instances, users reported contacts and settings being removed too. It's not clear, however, to what extent such problems were caused by iOS 5.

In extreme cases, users were reporting that their phones had been 'bricked' - rendered totally unresponsive - but once Apple's servers came back online even those users were able to complete the upgrade.

So many users were seeing 'error 3200' occur that, according to Windows blog Neowin, the term was briefly trending on Twitter.

One iOS developer, Jay Freeman, said on Twitter: "To anyone getting 'An internal error occurred.' (3200) while installing iOS 5.0, Apple's servers are swamped, and failing half the requests."

By this morning the delays seemed to have gone, suggesting that the problems had been caused by the extreme demand when iOS 5 was released.

iOS 5, which Apple contains more than 200 new features, brings significant changes to the way the operating system handles notifications. It also brings new services, such as iMessage, which allows iOS users to message each other, free of charge, and Twitter integration across a range of apps.

A free update, iOS 5 is compatible with the iPhone 4 and 3GS, as well as with iPad, iPad 2 and recent iPod touch models.

It also comes pre-installed on the iPhone 4S, which Apple releases tomorrow.
