Fashion is having a hip parade with its latest feminine flourish: the peplum.
The overskirt's position — sometimes as high as the bust — sets apart today's middle-maker from previous versions in the '80s, '50s and 1800s.
"It can be sporty, romantic or minimalist," says Roseanne Morrison, fashion director at industry consulting firm The Doneger Group. "The peplum says it all."
A wide belt transforms a voluminous shirt into a cincher, Morrison says. Worn with a pencil skirt or slim slacks, this waist-whittler flatters a variety of figures. Depending on where they fall, peplums contribute curves to boyish frames, flaunt hourglass figures and hide bulges.
How you package yourself makes the silhouette modern, not retro. "The peplum is the accessory," says Cushnie et Ochs' co-designer Carly Cushnie. "Wear your hair back and sleek, with a great heel.
"I don't think you need anything else."
