Apple unveils new iPad with 'Retina' display

The new device, named "new iPad", has what Apple calls a "Retina" display, which offers 3.1 million pixels, which is a higher screen resolution than a HDTV.

It also has a 5-megapixel rear camera, which features the same lens technology as Apple's iPhone 4S, and is capable of recording full 1080p HD video.

Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive, announced the new iPad at an Apple event in San Francisco. He described the device as the flagship among the company's "post-PC" products.

The new iPad will be released in the UK on Friday, March 16, with prices starting at £399 for the 16GB, WiFi-only version, and rising to £659 for the 64GB, WiFi and 3G model. The 16GB iPad will remain on sale at £329.

The company also confirmed the launch of a new Apple TV that shows full-HD films and television. Apple has also redesigned the user interface for the new Apple TV, which is released in Britain on the same day as the new iPad.

Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads since launch and, according to analysts IMS Research, has a 62 per cent share of the tablet market. Earlier this year, Tim Cook said he believed that tablets would soon overtake traditional PCs.

He said: "From the first day it shipped, we thought that the tablet market would become larger than the PC market and it was just a matter of the time it took for that to occur. I feel that stronger today than I did then."

Cook said that part of the reason for the iPad's success was the range of apps available. He said: "This is a key reason why momentum on iPad continues to build and competitive apps aren't gaining traction."

To underline the point, Cook showed comparisons of two apps running on an iPad and on a Samsung tablet. Demonstrating an Android version of Twitter, Cook said: "It kind of looks like a blown-up smartphone app. That's because that's what it is."

On Monday, the company announced that 25 billion apps had been downloaded from the iTunes App Store, which offers applications for Apple's iOS devices, the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

The first iPad was announced in 2010 by Apple's then-chief executive, Steve Jobs. A year later, Jobs unveiled the iPad 2, just a few weeks after going on medical leave from Apple. "We've been working on this product for a while and I just didn't want to miss today," he told the audience.
